Homestead Chores and yummy homemade recipes

This past weekend we spent some time doing chores on our farm. As I have mentioned in previous articles, we are getting ready to travel later this summer and plan to be gone for an extended period. With this in mind we are trying to get our property ready for us to leave. I got to mow the lawn for the first time on our riding lawn mower, which kind of felt like a ride at Disneyland.

I have been putting off cleaning the chicken coop, but finally tackled it this weekend. We use a method referred to as the Deep Bedding method, this method means we only clean the chicken coop twice a year. The Deep Bedding method differs from the Deep Litter method in that it is a non-composting system. With the Deep Bedding method, you add bedding to the coop whenever it becomes soiled. You repeat this until the bedding becomes piled up and you are unable to add more. We love this method because it requires less work and overall less time spent managing the chicken coop.

The other focus this weekend was making some yummy homemade recipes that I knew I had to share on here. The first recipe is for homemade pizza dough, I used Jill Winger's Brick Oven Pizza Recipe from her cookbook, The Prairie Homestead Cookbook.

The second recipe is for my favorite homemade ranch dressing, this recipe comes from Whole Sisters, it's called Dump Ranch.
